Liszt: The Legend of Saint Elisabeth

Other Concerts
Elbphilharmonie (Großer Saal), Hamburg

How much strength does it take to break with social expectations and follow unconventional paths? How can one unwaveringly violate established social rules and, in doing so, live contrary to one’s own needs for security and belonging? In Franz Liszt’s romantic masterpiece »The Legend of Saint Elisabeth«, the main character Elisabeth is a woman who – betrothed at the age of four and growing up far from her Hungarian homeland – confidently and determinedly goes her own way, renouncing wealth in the face of resistance from the class-based society and thus turning existing conditions upside down and calling them into question. Radical charity and uncompromising devotion guide the noble Elisabeth of Thuringia. Is this religious fanaticism or simply courage?

The concert is part of the current season series of the Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach Academy Hamburg entitled »Questions of Faith – What do we (still) believe in?«
